Raising the Bar on a New Jersey Planning Project
Summit wasn’t satisfied with the traditional approach
Have you ever visited Summit, New Jersey? It’s a small city with big ideas. Planners wanted a way to reach a broader audience, gather input 24/7 from all over town, and streamline communications with residents. So they worked with coUrbanize.
Summit used coUrbanize to…
- Manage all communications through a single interface
- Conduct two surveys without printing a sheet of paper
- Host an interactive map for residents to post ideas
- Collect input from pedestrians via text message
“The coUrbanize platform allowed us to capture a range of opinion and reactions that would not have been obtained without use of the online tool.”
Michael F. Rogers
City of Summit Administrator
The result: record-level engagement
More than 10% of Summit residents contributed ideas to the project through coUrbanize.
That meant 500 online and text comments, 600 survey responses, one masterful report for the planning board… and an innovation in governance award. Best of all, planners set up their project page in less than an hour. They viewed data and responded to comments in a few clicks. And they sent all communications through the project page.
How challenging was your last planning project?
Easy! A few short meetings and the report wrote itself.
So-so. I put in the time, but I didn’t get great community input.
Pretty rough. Nobody came to my meetings, even when I baked cookies.
I don’t want to talk about it.
